Svjetlan Junakovic is an artist originally from Zagreb.
His profession spans the different fields of artistic activity: sculptor, painter, illustrator but also screenwriter and director. He graduated from the Brera Academy of Fine Arts and exhibited his works in solo exhibitions in numerous capitals of Europe, Asia and America. He is counted among the five best illustrators of the world by the prestigious Jury of the IBBY – Andersen International Award.
He has worked closely with many publishing houses for many years, as an illustrator and author of books for children, who have been awarded, translated and published in many countries of the world.
He has won countless awards including the Certificate of Honor IBBY in New Delhi in 1998 and the Premio Città di Bari, as best foreign illustrator, published in Italy in 2003; the BIB Biennial of Illustration in Bratislava and the OITA biennial in Japan awarded him in 2001 and 2004 respectively.
In 2008, his book Famous Portraits of Common Animals (ed Logos, 2007) was chosen by the Ministry of Culture of Madrid as the best book of the year for children and teenagers. The book also received the Bologna Ragazzi Award, the Andersen Prize, and won the Sestri Levante’s Il Mondo dell’infanzia award for best illustrated book of the year.
In the film field, he has also made the award-winning short animated film My Way and is a set designer and creator of the puppets of the traveling show premiered at the Ljubljana and Maribor theatrical festivals in Slovenia.
His artistic activity is accompanied by the teaching of illustration at the International School of Sarmede, and he is professor of graphics at the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb. In recent years he has expanded his artistic activity focusing on sculpture.
